While walking from Zubiri to Pamplona, I needed to use the restroom. I found Hotel Akerreta just outside of Larrasoaña. I entered to find no one behind the front desk. A waitress in the back said baños, and pointed to the right. I walked in, did what I came to do and was washing my hands when the man running the front desk entered the bathroom. While menacingly standing in the door frame, blocking my exit, he asked "what are you doing here?" I said washing my hands. I left everything just as I'd found it. With disdain on his face and disgust in his voice, he said this hotel is not for "Pilgrims like you" and told me to get out. "Get out now."

I walked 13miles/21km today in Pamplona...and cried most of the Way. I've never felt this defeated and to be vey frank...I really just wanted to go home. After many miles...and many prayers to not let this man ruin my second Camino, I decided not to give others the power to ruin my happiness.

When this happened, he started calling me names. The only one I actually heard and understood was "stupid fat idiot." After saying this, he slammed the door on my back as I walked out. I turned and cussed him banging the door. He exited threatening to call the police. By then, this was a heated interaction. I yelled at him to call the police....that I would be happy to call them myself and tell them the way he was treating pilgrims (which is a HUGE problem, because crimes on pilgrims are greatly frowned upon here in Spain).

Beautiful country hotel on the camino in Akeretta. Member of the Posadas del Camino group of independent hoteliers. Nice place to stay on your camino.

Stupendous place to stop on camino. Quiet, tranquil, lovely, great evening dinner. Makes the trip the next day to Pamplona quick.

Rude and unhospitable management if they can't get to your money.

To the front desk man, I pray no one ever treats you or your family like you treated me. You didn't win ugly man...this "fat idiot pilgrim" will continue to find joy in each and every step she takes towards Santiago!

Today was my absolute WORST day on the Camino de Santiago. I never once experienced this type of darkness or meanness while walking my first Camino in 2015. Actually, I haven't EVER experienced this behavior while traveling.

The initial interaction shook me. His viscous insult..."you're a stupid, fat idiot." Why? Why would you say that to me? Do you know me? Do you realize I'm a daughter, a sister, a fiancée, a nurse, a cancer survivor?! What motivates people to do and say these hateful things?

The Camino is about truth and openness, so you can't know about all the good with hearing about the bad.

It is difficult to say anything negative. Potentially you could say the room is dated and could be more comfortable. However the location, price, friendliness of staff, other customers, food was all excellent. In addition, the food (specifically the main dish - steak & roast beef) was one of the best meals we had during our trip in Navarre, Spain.

This is a hotel of greed that has no place along the Camino.

He caught me a little off guard, so tried to explain in broken Spanish that the waitress showed me the bathroom. He wasn't having any of that. He just kept yelling at me, so I told him I'd be sure to spread the message to all my fellow pilgrims, my friends and associates how badly he treated people.

I was so shaken by this experience because the Camino de Santiago has always been a very beautiful, safe place to me. I was taken aback by this man's hatred, anger, ugliness and disrespect. His words echoed on and off in my head as I walked towards Pamplona..."Pilgrims like you." What does that even mean?!?! A pilgrim that is brown? A pilgrim that is an American...a Texan? One that had to use the bathroom? A pilgrim that washes her hands? A pilgrim that is a woman...? What type of pilgrim am I and why did I deserve to be treated like this?
